CUNY Graduate Center Doctoral Student, NOAA CESSRST II Fellow, and CUNY CREST HIRES Mentor, Richard Rivera participated in the community outreach event on incorporating equity and justice into National Weather Service (NWS) products on May 18, 2024.
The purpose of this event was to engage with the community to gather information on their knowledge of weather and its related phenomena/topics. Richard gained useful insights by talking to the attendees about the past, current, and anticipated weather patterns in Brooklyn. Further, he received some information on historical weather patterns from elderly residents who elaborated on what the area looked like in the past. Richard was inspired to think of innovative ways to disseminate more accessible and useful weather related insights to this community.
Richard believes that this event helped bridge the gap between his weather prediction research and community needs. Commenting on the day’s event Richard said, “The feedback received from the Northeast Brooklyn Community Center provided invaluable insights into weather related concerns.”
Richard is thankful to CUNY CREST and NOAA CESSRST for providing the support, resources for community engagement, and the platform to share his research findings as well as gather community input. He is also grateful to Miguel Johnson, 2024 CUNY CREST HIRES Mentor for helping him at the event.
